There once was a farmer who reaped a tremendous harvest. In fact, the harvest was so large he had more crops than he knew what to do with.

He actually had to stop in the middle of this day to contemplate how to deal with all the abundance of the things he’d received.

And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

Luke 12:7

Instead of worrying about where to put all his nice things he should have taken a trip to see the great Optometrist in the sky. God in Heaven took one look at this guy and realized He had an “I” problem.  Look at his words: What shall I do…I have no room for all my goods, etc.

Not once does He acknowledge that his great harvest is a blessing from God.

Across the street you can imagine another farmer who did not have a very good harvest. He only had enough for his family to survive the winter. Yet he will pray and offer thanks for what God has given him.

That concept is lost on this farmer. God calls him a fool (v9) and the farmer loses his life (and all his precious crops) that night.

However much you have, be sure to be thankful for it. It came from the Lord, the giver of all good things (James 1:17).
